PAC meets Peter, Nyondo today
The Public Affairs Committee (PAC) is today scheduled to meet opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Peter Mutharika in Lilongwe ahead of national prayers where all the presidential candidates are expected to sign a peace pledge.
The faith-based grouping is also expected to meet National Salvation Front (Nasaf) presidential candidate James Nyondo and Petra presidential candidate Kamuzu Chibambo tomorrow, according to PAC executive director Robert Phiri.
The signing of the peace pledge to be done during the national prayers by the presidential candidates in the May 20 Tripartite Elections is one way of ensuring violence free elections.
The prayers have been organised following meetings PAC had with the presidential candidates where it secured commitments from them on peaceful resolution in electoral violent conflicts.
Asked why PAC was not making public a report on what transpired during the meetings with the presidential candidates as promised, Phiri said the report will be released soon.
“We will fulfil what we promised and remain accountable. After meeting most of the candidates, the executive committee instructed us to organise interface meetings where we could meet the remaining candidates. So, as we are meeting candidates in preparation for national prayers , the three remaining candidates will have more time with PAC board members to discuss the 19 issues we raised with the rest.”
Phiri said PAC is requesting its donor to scale up funding to publish responses in the daily papers as presented to PAC.
“We will not doctor any document. The public will judge candidates based on written responses. Of course , it will be expensive but it is vital for the consolidation of democracy and constitutionalism.
